Job Description

What does a Homework Club volunteer do?

Our program works in partnership with schools and community to improve educational and employment outcomes for Australian-Somali young people. 

We teach our Homework Club Tutors to work with individual or small groups of students from 5 to 18 years of age to provide academic support and enrichment in a range of subject areas at primary or secondary level, including:

  • Maths
  • Science
  • English
  • Humanities

Just by being there and freely offering their time and support, tutors also help increase young people's:

  • engagement in their own education
  • confidence and motivation
  • career pathway success (for secondary students)

The benefits are far reaching, and our tutors make a huge difference to the lives of the young people they support.

Duration: One to two hours per week is required, during term time.

Location: West Heidelberg Vic, or sometimes online

What to expect:  Attending once a week, an afternoon or after school session, where tutors act as an academic coach and positive role model to primary and secondary school aged students. Tutors are to guide and facilitate learning by encouraging and imparting higher order thinking and study skills.

Who can volunteer?

Homework Club Tutors come from a wide range of backgrounds and include:

  • Parent with WWCC
  • People who are interested in making a difference in someone's life
  • Retired teachers
  • Professionals with spare time once a week
  • Secondary students 15 and over (to tutor primary school ages)
  • Tertiary students
  • Anyone who has a knowledge of Math, English, science or humanities and wants to help young people who may be experiencing disadvantage
  • We welcome people from all backgrounds and also love to see people from the Somali-Australian community helping local young people.

Skills and experience

What we need you to have is:

Demonstrated experience or ability to provide sound academic learning support

  • Identification with the values of our program and experience or interest in working with young people
  • Strong interpersonal, organisation and communication skills
  • A willingness to undergo a National Police check (we pay)
  • Apply for and provide a Working With Children Check
